Yesterday, IMDEA Energy hosted the kick-off meetin Yesterday, IMDEA Energy hosted the kick-off meeting of WAVE, an international project under the Water4All - Partnership 2024 Joint Transnational Call. 💧 🌍   🌊 WAVE brings together leading European partners to tackle two major environmental challenges: the global shortage of freshwater and the management of by-products from the dairy industry.   During the meeting, they laid the groundwork for the months ahead, reviewing planned activities across the different work packages, aligning strategies, and setting a shared vision to maximise the project’s impact. Most importantly, it was a great opportunity to strengthen collaboration and get to know each other as we embark on this exciting journey together.   👏 Proud to collaborate with: DTU - Technical University of Denmark, the Universidad de Valladolid, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, the International Hellenic University and 21st.BIO A/S.   More info 👉 https://c.madrid/vg8k4
📢 New Publication Alert! 🌱✨ We’re thrilled to shar 📢 New Publication Alert! 🌱✨ We’re thrilled to share our latest collaborative research: “Mycorrhiza-induced alterations in the spatial structure of stands in a subtropical forest” by Jingjing Xi, Hans Lambers, Chengjin Chu, Aphrodite Theofilidou, Panagiotis Kekelis, Nikolaos Monokrousos, Stavros D. Last week, Kyriaki and Neilan members of the Soil Ecology & Bioeconomy Lab spent several days at the Soil Zoology Department of the Senckenberg Museum of Natural History in Görlitz, working closely with Dr. Karin Hohberg and the Nematoda Section. They dove into the world of free-living soil nematodes, exploring: ✨ Morphological identification under inverted microscopes ✨ Techniques for nematode extraction, fixation, and slide preparation ✨ Community structure analyses and the use of nematodes as indicators of soil health ✨ Functional traits, biomass estimation, and taxonomy tools A great opportunity to sharpen skills, exchange knowledge, and connect with the Senckenberg research team. 🌱 From Mines to Microbes: Tracking Soil Recovery i 🌱 From Mines to Microbes: Tracking Soil Recovery in Action 🧬 We’re proud to share the dissertation work of Evdokia, an ATH Biology graduate and dedicated member of our Soil Ecology Lab! 🎓✨ 📖 Dissertation title: “Soil microbial community shifts during secondary succession with Robinia pseudoacacia for the restoration of lignite mines in Ptolemaida: a chronosequence study” Her research explored how bacterial communities evolve over 25 years of Robinia pseudoacacia restoration in post-lignite mining sites. 🔬 Key findings: ✨ Microbial diversity dips early, rebounds with organic matter buildup, then specializes over time. 🌍 Bacterial networks strengthen in the first years but later trade stability for specialization. ⚖️ While Robinia boosts soil fertility, its invasive nature requires careful ecological management.
